Meet Jana | Interior Designer | Residential & Commercial

With the expansion of the Hills & West Home product range into styling and decoration, with Hills & West Interiors, we are excited to be expanding the team.

Over the last 12 months we have been developing our Interiors styling offering and partner network both locally, in the UK and Europe, and today we would like to introduce you to the latest edition to the Hills & West family, Jana Fischer.

Growing up in a German town on the border of Denmark, Jana grew up with a touch of the Scandinavian “hygge”, in combination with her German values of structure, accuracy and punctuality. With a degree in Retail Business Management, Interior Design and Project Management, Jana has over 15 years experience working with leading European interior design consultants, focused on high-end residential projects and loves facing the challenge of small budget projects too.

We have already collaborated on multiple projects and have decided to make the partnership official. Forever positive, fabulously creative and a little quirky just like us, Jana is the perfect edition to the team.

“ Everyone deserves to live in a space which you can call HOME, where FORM – FUNCTION – LIFE combine.‘‘

A little bit about Jana…from Skandinavia to Australia

I grew up in a little town in the northern part of Germany, close to the border of Denmark, that’s why I love living close to the ocean. Not many people know this, but there are a few lovely beaches and is a great spot to get away for a holiday, while being next to main cities like Munich, Berlin and Hamburg. Sailing, going for a long beach walk, sitting near the fireplace or detoxing in the sauna in winter is what you can enjoy where I come from.

My parents taught me to be always open minded and that’s the reason why I love to travel and meet new people. Getting to know different cultures and their history, food and landscapes is what I can’t get enough of. What I never expected however, was moving and living in a different country, which I did 2 years ago. I travelled to Australia for a holiday and met my new partner in Sydney, and from that time on my life started a new and exciting chapter …

As an interior designer…

Working as an Interior Designer combines all the things I love; working with people, different locations, styles and the endless possibility of colour and material combinations.

Stepping with one foot in someone else’s home is sharing privacy which I respect in every way and am pleased that the client places their trust in me. Connection with people and creating something together is more fun and there is always something you can learn from each other. Creating spaces with people, for people, to feel home, safe and happy.

Projects

I am very grateful to have been the leading Design Director and Project Manager of multiple high-end residential renovations, a transformation of a historical farmhouse into a hotel, concept and delivery of a large apartment complex, a small restaurant with several small residential renovations and interior stylings.

5 interior tips

1. Keep the pieces you love which tell a story.

2. Don’t follow every new trend, find the style you like (which can still be a mix of 2 or 3)

3. Buying a replica is OK (in some cases it is difficult to find or afford the original)

4. Choose wisely and invest in good quality

5. Sustainability, environmental and local community

Working with H&W Interiors

Working together with H&W is an absolutely pleasure. I love the positive and creative energy we share for every project and currently delivering a new Kitchen in Balmain, redesigning a study and the interiors for a dining and bedroom in St. Ives.

We always combine our ideas and having a great eye for detail, design, style and materials.

Aisha is great at budgeting, building partnerships with suppliers and as a design partner, while I manage the visualisation of design concept and timelines for the design and building process.

Your WFH inspo..

Working more from home in the times of these restrictions with closed shops or factories, I still see the positive side affects. We are always rushing from one spot to the other and losing so much time traveling around. Having an organised place to work from home gives us the opportunity to be more productive. It also lets us be more flexible in scheduling meetings, which we are now able to offer our clients with our first free virtual design consultation.

Working from home can improve the quality of work/life balance.

5 things on the bucket list

Sorry for disappointing you but I never had a bucket list and I also can’t write one. I always try to do all the things I really want do but writing them down would create a feeling of pressure which we all get enough of from the outside world.

Favourite H&W piece…

LUNAR is my favourite. I love the unique design and simple mix and match options as well as the 3 different variations to wear the bag. Also knowing the designer behind the product and the fact that it was the first piece I can see her personality reflecting. The LUNAR can be classy or casual, flexible and easy, everything in perfection from design to material.

A piece made by a modern woman for modern woman!
